The Honest Truth

Why you’re stuck at 6

If you’re reading this, you have probably sat IELTS more than once, worked hard, and still seen the same number: 6, or 6.5. It’s one of the most frustrating places to be β€” your English clearly works, yet the band won’t move.

The reason is simple, and it’s good news: the jump from 6 to 7 is not about learning more English. A Band 6 writer and a Band 7 writer often know almost the same words and grammar. What separates them is precision, accuracy, development and control β€” and those are habits, which can be changed deliberately.

Here is what an examiner is actually reacting to when they write β€˜6′ instead of β€˜7′:

Task Response
Band 6Addresses the task, but some parts are thin; position may waver; ideas listed, not developed.
Band 7Addresses every part; one clear position held throughout; each idea explained, exemplified and extended.
Coherence & Cohesion
Band 6Organised, but cohesion is mechanical β€” a linker bolted onto every sentence; paragraphs hold more than one idea.
Band 7Logical throughout; one central idea per paragraph; cohesion used naturally, including referencing.
Lexical Resource
Band 6Adequate but repetitive and imprecise β€” β€˜good / bad / very / a lot’; some word-form errors.
Band 7Flexible and precise; natural collocations; some less common words used accurately.
Grammar
Band 6A mix of simple and complex sentences, but errors appear in many of them.
Band 7A variety of complex structures and β€” crucially β€” frequent error-free sentences.

Notice the two themes running through every row: accuracy and development. A Band 7 writer would rather write three sentences perfectly than five sentences with errors.
